PITTSBURGH SLIM Gears Up for DEF JAM Records Release

Hip-hop stories never begin in Pittsburgh.

They also rarely involve stories featuring both Jay-Z and Nirvana. And, while we're at it, it's rare that Penthouse models, underground mash-up tapes, mid-90s Bronx rappers Camp Lo and New Wave geeks Devo all coalesce in one person's background.

So, meet Pittsburgh Slim. He's different. And he's different at a time when the music industry could really, really use something special and unique. And fun.

Pittsburgh Slim--named after legendary pimp/author Iceberg Slim, as referenced in Jay-Z's "Kingdom Come" ("Where's Iceberg Slim/he was the coldest cat...")--was always an anomaly. He rocked the 412, literally. Growing up in the Steel City, Slim had a duel career going, rapping from the age of 12 on...and playing guitar in a variety of post-punk bands, all indebted to the warped noise assaults of Nirvana and Jesus Lizard.

Slim had no problems meshing his two worlds. Apparently, the music world didn't either, as his first group became the 'burgh's go-to opening act for some of rap's biggest names, including Jurassic 5, Nelly, 50 Cent and Ludacris. When they hit town to play the Pavilion or the Arena, Slim and his crew were inevitably the opening act. They even had a local hit or two - songs that somehow got play on alternative, rock and urban radio.

But Pittsburgh can only lead you so far. Despite his group being, as Slim put it, "the Run-DMC of the city," it was time to move on. So Slim split, spending his time between New York and Los Angeles, recording, re-inventing himself, making mixtapes, searching for both inspiration and a deal.

Slim wasn't doing what everyone was doing. He was, in his words, mixing "80s pop, some rock'n'roll flavor, and hip-hop beats." His reference points ranged from Camp Lo to Devo, from Nirvana to Rihanna. "In a way, I'm kind of like a mash-up artist," he says. "This isn't traditional in any sense." He laughs. "I can rap over a Yaz song or a lunch room table beat."

[Slim actually has a mixtape--Downtown Wednesday Night --that sees him rapping over everything from the aforementioned Yaz to the Rolling Stones, AC/DC, Lenny Kravitz and Metallica. Good luck finding it...but do check out his MySpace page to hear a not-quite-cleared take on "Smells Like Teen Spirit." As Slim puts it, "Dave and Courtney cleared the sample for me...but the publishing people didn't. Oh well."]

Fortunately, the industry was looking for something new. An old-fashioned bidding war erupted. After receiving three offers from major labels, a last-minute request came in from Jay-Z. "On that Friday, he knew nothing about me," says Slim. "But he heard my stuff, over the weekend, and came back with the best offer."

So, what exactly did they hear in that brief time to elicit such response? You can find the results on Tastemaker, Slim's major label debut. The album reflects his love of classic hip-hop and rock, and features the work of some of today's hottest producers (Wyclef Jean, Toby Gad and DJ Toomp, among others). "It's an album of singles," says Slim. "No album cuts. This is fun shit for the clubs -- I work my stuff at a higher speed than traditional hip-hop."

One song you may already know is "Girls Kiss Girls." It's the one that caught Jay-Z's ears - and it's hard not to hear why, given the song's relatively simple but brilliant concept, its infectious electro-pop beat and, well, Slim himself, who turns what could be something crass into something funny, sexy and, for lack of better description, "I-can't-get-this-chorus-out-of-my-head." [The video, featuring Penthouse cover model Krista Anye, is sort of eye-catching, too.]

"That song is the culmination of my years of rapping...and watching Internet porn," he says (jokingly?). "Look, I could date a girl who lives in Soho, a Suicide Girl, or an Eryka Badu coffeeshop type. I'm not a douche bag. I just had this great idea for a song, that's all, and I knew where I wanted it to go."

So, in the end, who is Pittsburgh Slim? There's no real comparison, but the rapper offers up one thought. "I think my shit will hit across the board," he says. "There's very few artists out with that appeal, but I think I can accomplish that, too."

its late

i think i forgot the goodnight poems the last couple of days so heres a good one for you for i go to bed :-)

Promise Yourself
(one the most classic motivational poems)
Promise yourself to be so strong that nothing can
disturb your peace of mind.

To talk health, happiness, and prosperity to
every person you meet.

To make all your friends feel like there is
something in them.

To look at the sunny side of everything and make your
optimism come true.

To think only of the best, to work only for the best,
and expect only the best.

To be just as enthusiastic about the success of others
as you are about your own.

To forget the mistakes of the past and press on the
greater achievements of the future.

To wear a cheerful countenance at all times and give
every living person you meet a smile.

To give so much time to the improvement of yourself
that you have no time to criticize others.

To be too large for worry, too noble for anger, and too
strong for fear, and to happy to permit the
presence of trouble.

BEANIE SIGEL new album release

BEANIE SIGEL HAS THE SOLUTION
NEW ALBUM SET FOR DECEMBER 11 RELEASE
ON STATE PROPERTY/ROC-A-FELLA RECORDS
MC CELEBRATES 10 YEARS WITH DEF JAM
New Single "All of the Above" Featuring R. Kelly kicks off
the Re-birth of THE MAC

Beanie Sigel, the Philadelphia MC who's been called "riveting" by the New York Times and others, is set to make his much-anticipated return with The Solution (State Property/Roc-A-Fella). Hitting stores December 11, the "Broad Street Bully" unleashes his highly anticipated fourth album to unveil 17 tracks of pure fire. The Solution's first single, "All of the Above," is fast becoming the monster radio smash that has eluded Beans for most of his career. It's a melodically grizzly epic, featuring the timeless King of R&B, R. Kelly. Produced by The Runners, "All of the Above" will be officially impacting radio October 29, the video directed by Jessy Terrero (50 Cent's Candy Shop, Soul Plane) will hit video channels later this month.

"I realize that the game has changed... Everything sounds the same...very repetitive," says Beanie Sigel. "The Solution is the answer to all of that. For those that want to here a little rock, jazz or soul, I got all of that!"

The Solution is the follow up to Beanie's 2005 critically acclaimed, certified gold release The B. Coming, which earned Sigel his highest chart debut to date. "The crucial street credibility that can make or break a hip-hop star didn't stop curbside for Sigel," commented USA Today. "His emcee skills and potent rhymes are undeniable." Beans, who can also be heard on the track "Ignorant Shit," on Jay-Z's upcoming epic American Gangster, has brought his most diverse musical offering to the table yet.

The Solution features R.Kelly, Scarface, Styles P, Raheem DeVaughn as well as production from The Runners, Eric Hudson (Trey Songz), newcomers Harry & Alex and Philly's own Dre & Vidal (Usher, Mary J. Blige, Chris Brown).

Very different from his previous projects, Sigel experiments on songs like "I'm In" which shows his smooth "Lady's Man" persona with the sample of Luther Vandross' "Make Me a Believer." "Children" is a soulful Marvin Gaye rendition focusing on the problems in the community among children and their missing fathers while "The Day" produced by Dre & Vidal collaborated with Harry & Alex taps into Beanie's rock side.

"I consider myself relevant in the rap game at all times," explains Sig. "After you party and do all that, now the real world kicks in. The pain, the stress, agony. The lessons you learn. Your come ups, your downfalls. The real world--which I deal with in my music--is always relevant. All the shit might go through in the course of a day is on my album. I'm talking about religion, spiritually, getting a piece of mind. All that counts and all that's in my music."

Beanie Sigel first hit the scene back in 2000 with the release of his debut LP The Truth on Roc-A- Fella Records, which was certified gold. He then went on to release the The Reason, which introduced the world to his own rap group State Property, a collective of Philly rappers signed to Roc-A- Fella Records. In 2002, Beanie Sigel made his acting debut in Roc- A-Fella's first film production State Property.

110 tips to market your music

By: Artistopia

Marketing is all the activities and processes of planning, communicating and executing a product, with a price, the promotion and the placement of an item to an end user. Your music is your product which you are then supplying to the end user - the music fan. Between you and the fan is a big space on how to bridge this gap. You may think that if you just get a record deal with some label, your prayers are answered and this instant bridge is built across that space. This is for the most part, not how things work today.

As an aspiring indie or unsigned singer, songwriter, or a musician in a band you can not do just a few things to promote yourself and expect success in your music career. Offline and online music promotion and marketing exposure is an ongoing process in this DIY age. Music companies are looking for artists that already have fan bases, sold CDs, and are proven ready to move up to a higher level. Presented here are more than 100 tips and ideas for you to think about and tweak as you will, to get noticed, gain fans, and get heard. You have to find a way to stand above the crowd, for talent alone is not enough.

poem2 "Yesterday"

Yesterday
Yesterday has once again,
come back to let me know.
That my mistakes are not forgot,
today again they show.

Reminding me that once again,
I failed in some small way.
This recall is just a hint,
of what I've yet to pay.

Don't be fooled and think its past,
when all seems good and fine.
Yesterday can be a friend,
it comes here to remind.

It does it as a helpful voice,
to keep us all aware.
If we learn from its advice,
then heart ache we may spare.

So yesterday come visit please,
remind me once again.
Tomorrow comes just much to quick,
mistakes I need to mend.

Remind me what I should not do,
and if I've done it right.
One day maybe I will learn,
and win this endless fight.

CASH MONEY/UNIVERSAL MOTOWN ICON BIRDMAN WINS AT 2nd ANNUAL

Hip-hop Mogul Wins The Alltel People's Champ (Viewer's Choice) Award with Cash Money Superstar Lil Wayne for "Stuntin' Like My Daddy"

Cash Money Co-Founder and platinum-plus superstar Birdman snagged thecoveted Alltel People's Champ (Viewer's Choice) Award with Cash Money signature star Lil Wayne for their smash "Stuntin' Like My Daddy" at the 2nd Annual BET Hip-Hop Awards this weekend. The scorching hit single was the touchstone anthem from the duo's epic 2006 pairing, the platinum-plus Like Father Like Son.

Birdman is gearing up for the much anticipated launch of his third solo effort, 5 * Stunna, which is slated to be in-stores this winter, his latest incarnation behind the mic that has seen him build one of hip-hop's most formidable empires both as an artist and as a respected label CEO and entrepreneur.

Birdman (Bryan Williams) and his brother Slim (Ronald Williams) crafted their New Orleans start-up imprint - Cash Money Records - more than a decade ago, transforming the label into a 45 million selling global powerhouse.
5 * Stunna continues the tireless hitmaker's amazing track record, with the first single from the new album, another pairing with Lil Wayne, "Poppin' Bottles," lighting up the urban radio, mainstream video and digital landscape.

Birdman's new album expands on his own blazing repertoire, featuring a star-studded array of collaborators, including the multi-talented Lil Wayne, Young Jezzy, Rick Ross and Cash Money newcomer Brisco.
Producers stoking the Birdman hit-making furnace include Cool & Dre, T-Mixx, Scott Storch & Swizz Beatz, among others. The video for "Poppin' Bottles" has become a BET favorite right out of the box, with hip-hop fans buzzing about several of the other songs included on the soon-to-be released disc, including "100 Million," featuring Lil Wayne, Rick Ross and Young Jeezy, and "I'm A Stunna.

"Considered one of hip-hops most influential entrepreneur/artist masterminds, the hip-hop icon has established a direct connection to rap fans by staying true to the street-savvy code of cashmoney records

Birdman first stepped into the solo artist realm in 2002 with Birdman , and set the stage for even more artistic success with his pivotal second solo album, 2005's, Fast Money, launching the radio staples "Get Your Shine On"and "Neck Of The Woods.

"Birdman's industry-recognized business-building skills also continued to make him a fan-favorite whether performing or pulling strings behind the scenes

The Cash Money foundry has also been recognized as an unprecedented force for change in New Orleans' more underserved neighborhoods, delivering aid for victims of Hurricane Katrina (Cash Money's own headquarters were leveled by the disaster) giving away thousands of Turkey dinners every Thanksgiving to underprivileged families, and launching Cash Money for Kids which has allocated sports tickets to local youth. Over the years, the company has become one of Louisiana's most compelling and successful business models, contributing millions of dollars in economic power to the New Orleans locale, introducing and re-launching an explosive array of artists from Lil Wayne, to Teena Marie (on the Cash Money Classics imprint) to Big Tymers - which also included Williams as a member to Brisco and Glasses Malone.

The label has groomed countless successful artists, production entities, business enterprises (including Birdman's endorsement deals with Lugz Shoesand Rockstar Games, among others). Through it all, the colorful mogul has managed to stay true to the principles of the street, remaining a vital, breakthrough artist himself while nurturing one of the most revered entertainment empires in the history of the genre.

befor i go to sleep

hey readers, its not realy late here in europe but i have a migrain so im going to bed early and i thought maybe its nice to end my days on this blog with a spiritual poem or article or some, so heres the first one i found on the web, goodnight everyone - msreb

If you think you are beaten, your are
If you think you dare not, you won't,
If you like to win, but don't think you can
It's almost a cinch you won't

If you think you'll lose, you're lost
For out in the world you find,
Success begins with a fellow's will
It's all in a state of mind

For many a game is lost
Ere even a play is run,
And many a coward fails
Ere even his work is begun

Think big and your deeds will grow
Think small and you'll fall behind
Think that you can and you will
It's all a state of mind

If you think you are out-classed, your are
You've got to think high to rise
You've got to be sure of yourself before
You can ever win a prize

Life battles don't always go
To the stronger or faster man
But sooner or later, the man who wins
Is the fellow who thinks he can

Seasoned soul-rocker Ben Harper

Seasoned soul-rocker Ben Harper recently dropped by our Los Angeles studio to perform songs from his eighth studio album, 'Lifeline,' and discuss the making of that album, most of which took place in one of Harper's favorite cities: Paris. "You're not only a product of where you're from, but a product of where you're at," the California native told Spinner. "Being in Paris brought out a sound and a feel to this record."

Watch Harper's five sparkling live performances and don't miss the interview, which finds Harper listing his favorite songs to cover, including Pearl Jam's 'Indifference,' and weighing in on the upcoming Presidential election.

tour info k smith

hey guys here is some extra information about the K Smith Tour see dates below

WILL SMITH’S NEPHEW K. SMITH MAKES HIS DEBUT WITH “BETTER MAN” FEATURING OMARION

New Rapper From Philly Performs On The Russ Parr Back To School Tour

(New York City– August 9, 2007) Will Smith became the first rapper to win a Grammy in 1998, and now nearly a decade later, his nephew K. Smith is following in his footsteps with his debut single “Better Man” featuring Omarion. The song is heating up radio and video outlets across the country (video directed by Omarion’s manager Chris Stokes and features artist Yung Berg), and now K. Smith is introducing himself on his first tour, the Russ Parr Back To School Tour which kicked off August 3rd in Detroit and continues through August 17th in Washington, D.C. The seventeen-year old rapper is proving he’s a magnetic performer as he shares the stage with several stars including Chris Brown.

K. Smith is signed to a joint venture between Will’s Overbrook Entertainment and The Coalition, the firm which launched the careers of Eve and Fat Joe. Smith’s influences include LL Cool J and 50 Cent, and he’s developed his own distinctive flow which he displays on “Better Man” and his first album “Streetz To Hollywood” due to be released early in 2008. This electric new hip-hop artist co-wrote “Better Man,” and he worked on his debut CD with proven hit makers Mike City (whose credits include Usher, Jamie Foxx, Chris Brown and Rihanna) and Trackmasters (known for their productions with Mary J. Blige, The Notorious B.I.G., R. Kelly, and Jay-Z).

Check out K. Smith on tour, on radio, video and CD, and you’ll discover that as he’s moved from Philadelphia to L.A. and traveled the “Streetz To Hollywood,” he’s truly developed into a “Better Man.”

K SMITH

Online Videos by Veoh.com

The best fiction is always based in some truth, even if the truth hasn’t happened yet.

17 year-old rapper K-Smith has already lived a life that has entertained millions.

The nephew of box office superstar and Grammy Award winning MC, Will Smith, K is intimately acquainted with the character his uncle popularized on television.

“I’m the real Fresh Prince,” he says confidently. “[In Philly] I was in placements because I used to act up, sent away to Juvenile facilities. Then I came out here and carried my problems to L.A a little bit. When I finally came to this music thing it got me on the right path.”

Before K became immersed in melodies he made noise in less constructive ways.

The discipline of home schooling and organized sports couldn’t tame his allure for breaking the law.

“It was fighting, being around the wrong people. That whole lifestyle in philly,” he remembers.

Like his sitcom counterpart, around 2004 he moved out to L.A to stay with his uncle, hoping the warm weather and open spaces would change his perspective a bit.

While growing up in the presence of a box office star and millionaire came with definite advantages, Kyle didn’t allow it to spoil him.

“What keeps me level is that I still go to Philly and live with my mom. I’ve witnessed both sides. I go back to Philly but I’ve slept in Nelson Mandela’s house and the White House.”

With that much talent in his gene pool, it wasn’t long before K would work on making waves of his own.

“Seeing my uncle perform and seeing how people respond to him [made me want to rap.] I love pleasing the crowd and getting the attention back.”

After cutting his teeth at local shows K-Smith is putting the finishing touches on his debut album, Streetz to Hollywood. The first single, “Better Man” features a lady-pleasing cameo from Omarion and establishes K-Smith as a charismatic young talent that is eager to make his own mark on the music industry.

“[People] think I’m going to follow in the footsteps of my uncle. You won’t hear crazy cursing from me, but you’ll hear more edgy records,” he says. “I have a cut called ‘Million Bucks’ that samples Ludacris on the hook (from his hit “Stand Up”) where I rhyme ‘I hit the club, when I leave, they be all in awe/ got shorties takin’ off they bra like it’s mardi gras.’ That’s not Fresh Prince at all.”

The title track gives K a chance to display his story telling abilities as well, sharing his unique perspective of life in Philly and L.A. “Picture this, a twelve year old caught in a trap/Dad left when he was three, mom strung out on crack.”

However, this young man, who counts LL Cool J and 50 Cent amongst his influences, is ready to take his camera-ready style and confident delivery and set a new standard for rocking a party. With production from The Trackmasters, Mike City and newcomers Jukebox and Elijah “EK” Kelly, Streetz to Hollywood is sure to see heavy rotation on radio and T.V outlets nationwide.

“There are a lot of joints for the ladies and I have club records. The fellas will respect my swagger,” he says with a grin. “I say stuff to the ladies that the fellas might want to say, but they don’t even have to say it. Just turn the song on and I’ll say it for them.”

WILD STYLE Celebrates 25th Year Anniversary

RHINO CELEBRATES 25 YEARS OF WILD STYLE

Groundbreaking Film about the Origins of Hip-Hop Culture Featuring Old
School Icons Grandmaster Flash, Fab 5 Freddy and Busy Bee Is Expanded with New Extras for a Special Anniversary Edition

Available October 23 from Rhino Entertainment

Filming on location in the South Bronx in 1982, director Charlie Ahearn captured a rare look at the true origins of hip-hop culture with his groundbreaking film WILD STYLE. Featuring appearances by such legendary and influential old-school giants as Grandmaster Flash, Fab 5 Freddy, Cold Crush Brothers, Rock Steady Crew and Chief Rocker Busy Bee, this groundbreaking film is recognized worldwide as the premier hip-hop film and was inducted by the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as one of the 10 best rock 'n' roll movies of all time. To celebrate the 25th anniversary of this captivating time capsule, Rhino will release a special edition of the DVD expanded with new extras including a mini documentary, footage of a 20th anniversary concert, interviews and unreleased photos. WILD STYLE will be available October 23 at all retail outlets and www.rhino.com for a suggested retail price of $14.95.

The DVD contains a digital transfer from the original 16mm film with commentary by director Ahearn and Fab 5 Freddy. Several extras debut on the special anniversary edition of WILD STYLE including a mini documentary featuring interviews with Fab 5 Freddy, Lee Quinones, Busy Bee, Lady Pink and Ahearn plus footage from the 20th anniversary concert held at the original amphitheater, a "Bongo Barbershop" DJ battle in the Bronx featuring Grand Master Caz, a new musical short with Busy Bee titled "Busy On The Beach," scenes from the 25th Anniversary Wild Style Reunion Show and an expanded gallery with unreleased photos.

The film follows the exploits of maverick tagger Zoro (real life graffiti artist Lee Quinones), whose work attracts the attention of an East Village art fancier (Patti Astor) and is commissioned to paint the stage for a giant Rapper's Convention. An authentic documentation of the early days of hip-hop in the boroughs of New York, everything in WILD STYLE is real -- the story, style, characters, and most of the actors, are drawn from the community.

The film shows many early hip-hop personalities in action before they went on to acquire national acclaim. Chief among these is Fab 5 Freddy, who hosted Yo! MTV Raps from its inception and plays the brash rap promoter Phade in the movie. Producer/director/writer Ahearn credits Freddy for the film's vision of hip-hop as a unified culture. WILD STYLE may not have been the first movie featuring rappers, but was the first to link graffiti, break dancing, DJing and document the birth of hip-hop nation.

Tiffany Evans enjoys life. Whether she's doing the hottest new dance moves in front of the mirror, hanging out with her friends or pouring over fashion. Tiffany radiates the joy of a teenager having fun and making the most of what the world has to offer.

Nowhere is her exuberant outlook expressed better than when she sings. She might be just a teen, but her musical ability shows experience, passion and wisdom coming from a place far beyond the date on her birth certificate. With a multi-octave voice already drawing comparisons to legendary ladies like Patti Labelle and Whitney Houston, Tiffany blends classic R&B and pop vocalizing with a self-reliant attitude and a bubbly teenage energy. Tiffany Evans marks Tiffany Evan's long-awaited Columbia Records debut.

Featuring songs and production from Grammy winner Narada Michael Walden (Whitney Houston, Aretha Franklin, Mariah Carey), explosive beatmakers The Clutch and DJ Smurf, and a guest spot from platinum-selling songstress Ciara, Tiffany Evans "reflects who I really am," says Tiffany. "It's from my heart." One listen to Tiffany Evans and it's clear that now is Tiffany's time to shine.

Deb will begin dating again, forcing Irv to play babysitter while she is out on the town. And after years of legal separation, Deb will officially file for divorce, forcing both to re-examine what kind of relationship they have - and ultimately want. Will the challenges of rebuilding his empire strain his family beyond the breaking point?

This is the story of a fallen king fighting for his throne and of a father fighting for his family. Follow the journey of hip-hop's greatest comeback this season on "Gotti's Way".

HURRICANE CHRIS SET TO PERFORM AT BET HIP-HOP AWARDS

MULTI-NOMINEE HURRICANE CHRIS SET TO PERFORM AT BET HIP-HOP AWARDS

MOST NOMINATED NEW ARTIST WITH FOUR NODS INCLUDING TRACK OF THE YEAR

OFFICIAL DEBUT ALBUM 51/50 RATCHET IN STORES OCTOBER 23RD

HURRICANE CHRIS - LIVE! Listening Party (51/50 RATCHET IN STORES 10/23!!)
VIDEO: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=84DLX9rHvXI

New York, NY - Hurricane Chris, Polo Grounds Music/J Records' newest hip-hop phenomenon, has been selected to perform his hit single "A Bay Bay" from his upcoming debut album 51/50 Ratchet, on the 2nd Annual BET Hip Hop Award. Storming his way into the hip-hop scene with his hit "A Bay Bay," Hurricane Chris received four BET Hip-Hop Awards including Track of the Year, Ringtone of the Year, Rookie Artist of the Year and the Alltel People's Choice (Viewer's Choice). The four nominations make Hurricane Chris the most voted amongst the other "rookie" nominees (Plies, Rich Boy, Lil' Boosie and MIMS)! The BET Hip-Hop Awards will air on the network on October 17 at 9:00PM ET/PT.

Even though Hurricane Chris made the world take notice with the summer's biggest and most addictive hip-hop hit "A Bay Bay" with over 2.3 million digital/mobile sales, and will continue to keep everyone's attention with his chart-climbing new single "The Hand Clap," he's far from a rookie. Rapping since the age of 8, Hurricane Chris has accumulated years of grinding and freestyling in Shreveport, LA (home of the Ratchet Movement), resulting in numerous guest appearances and mixtapes, including his most recent, Louisi-Animal, which, according to a positive review by the New York Times, "makes it even harder to wait for the album."

Now 18 years old, the wait will soon be over as Hurricane Chris is set to release his official major label debut album 51/50 Ratchet on October 23 on Polo Grounds Music/J Records. Executive produced by Michael "Mr. Collipark" Crooms and Bryan Leach, President of Polo Grounds Music, 51/50 Ratchet is destined to be one of the biggest breakout albums from the south since Young Jeezy.

While the Ratchet Movement consists of the lifestyle and culture of Shreveport, LA, including the dance craze, "The Ratchet," which was recently cited by Rolling Stone as one of "5 Reasons Hip-Hop Is Not Dead," the Ratchet sound was created by Lava House's in-house producer Phunk Dawg, the man behind the rise of both Hurricane Chris and fellow Louisiana representative Lil' Boosie. On 51/50 Ratchet, Phunk Dawg expands the Ratchet sound into several standout cuts, all complemented by Hurricane Chris' lyrical ferocity, including the addictive "A Bay Bay," "The Hand Clap," "Do Something" and "Momma," an ode to mothers everywhere. Mr. Collipark and The Package Store add their production savvy to the soon-to-be club bangers "Beat In My Trunk," Getting Money" and "Playas Rock," featuring Polo Grounds Music label mate Boxie.

With top-notch production and an album full of poetic wit and street sensibility, Hurricane Chris and his debut album 51/50 Ratchet is poised to resurrect Hip-Hop.

stunning good looks, Amerie

Blessed with keen intelligence and stunning good looks, Amerie could have chosen any number of career paths. Yet from an early age, the 22-year-old R&B chanteuse knew what her future held. "It sounds like a cliché," she says, "but I always knew I was going to sing. I always knew that music was what I was going to do." You can hear that desire in Amerie's voice. It's a voice that's sweet, sassy, and sultry, with a hint of bad girl edge. Amerie's brand of soul is both infectious and intoxicating, and it's evident throughout All I Have, her sizzling Columbia debut.

Asked to describe All I Have, Amerie offers, "The music and the lyrics really put you into a zone. When (producer/songwriter) Rich Harrison and I began creating the record, we knew that fusing beautiful melodies with hard, hip-hop beats would move people. I think we've accomplished that."

The proof can be heard in Amerie's 12-inch single, "Why Don't We Fall In Love." Leaked to radio in the spring of 2002, "Why Don't We Fall in Love" exploded, creating a strong buzz and heavy anticipation for Amerie's album. It's no wonder why the public and the programmers responded so enthusiastically. Laced with a sultry undercurrent, fueled by an uplifting message about finding your soulmate and being in love with your dreams, meanwhile propelled by Amerie's rock steady vocals, "Why Don't We Fall In Love" is more than a hot track; it's the opening salvo from a singer who has elevated the stakes for hip-hop soul.

What's remarkable about Amerie's rise is how fast it's occurred. She and Rich (whose previous credits include Mary J. Blige) began laying down the foundation for the album just two years ago, and now All I Have is showing the world just how much Amerie has got to give. "It's been pretty amazing," she admits. "We really worked hard on those songs and just let our creativity go. I guess this is what happens when you're focused, have good people around you, and trust your heart and your instincts."

Amerie was raised in a military family, so the family moved often; she lived on bases from Alaska to Germany. The traveling stopped when the family moved to Virginia, and Amerie to Washington DC, which she has called home for several years.

Through her mother, who is a painter, singer, and classical pianist, Amerie was exposed to the arts. Bolstered by those influences, Amerie began gravitating towards pop and R&B, getting into Madonna, Mary J. Blige, Toni Braxton and Whitney Houston. Along with a healthy dose of divas and classical composers, Amerie dipped into her father's old soul collection. As she puts it, "My taste was pretty well-rounded."

With the love of music and the desire to perform driving her, Amerie started studying dance, and in the 3rd grade, began to enter talent shows, which she continued to do throughout high school. After high school graduation, Amerie's family moved from Alaska to the East Coast, and once she had settled into her new hometown, Amerie decided to take her dreams to the next level; she began looking for an opportunity to get into the music business. "Being in DC offered me more opportunities for singing and meeting other musicians," Amerie explains. Not only was she trying to break into the industry, but Amerie was also attending prestigious Georgetown University, where she graduated with a degree in English and Fine Arts.

Through a friend, Amerie was introduced to DC native Rich, whose production skills had already caught the ears of noted industry heavyweights Jeff Burroughs and Darryl Williams of Rise Entertainment and Edwin Holmes of EHM. Rich and Amerie got together, meeting for the first time in a McDonald's parking lot. "Not too glamorous, huh?" Amerie laughs. After Amerie heard Rich's tracks, and Rich heard her sing, the work began. Quickly she and Rich realized that they not only had common goals, but great creative chemistry as well. "We would just sit and brainstorm and it just flowed from there," she remembers. One song became two, two became three, and three grew to five, becoming a demo. Within months, that demo made its way to Columbia Records, where Amerie was immediately offered a deal. Soon, she was not only recording her own album, but also working on collaborations with labelmates Nas and Royce da 5' 9". "Writing on those songs, along with recording them, was a great experience for me," she says. "It really felt good to work with such respected artists."

From the moment Amerie entered the studio to record All I Have, she knew that she wanted to unleash a sound that was gritty, yet melodic. Pretty, yet tough. Something different, yet something familiar enough to entice listeners. Together, they married Rich's hard-edged beats and well-crafted melodies to Amerie's soaring vocals. You can hear the result in songs like the single, "Talkin' To Me." With its slinky steely guitars, an insistent groove, and Amerie's lilting vocal style, "Talkin' To Me" is a song that Amerie modestly describes as "'infectious.' It's about that chemistry you have with someone without even speaking." Then she adds, "There's a fresh feel to it; it's very cool and laid-back." The album offers smooth and jazzy love ballads like "Nothin' Like Loving You," while keeping the emotional level high with tracks like the edgy "I Just Died," which, as Amerie tells it, "is about a passion that is like no other."

Through all of this, Amerie makes sure to thank the One who made this all possible: "I wrote the outro, 'I'm Reminded,' as a thank-you to God for leading me to all of this. Through all the ups and downs and uncertainties, He was always in control. I was very passionate about my dreams, but I believe my parents' prayers really contributed to everything."

It's clear that passion is something that Amerie knows well. You can hear the passion and commitment to singing that has lead her to this point in her life and the making of this album. Now, she's getting the chance to live her dreams and bring her talent to the world. Ask Amerie what she wants fans to hear when they check out All I Have and her response is considered and thoughtful: "I'd like them to hear that this is real music. You can feel it. This music has substance, and in All I Have, you get a glimpse into Rich's life and mine as well."

SNOOP DOGG AND DJ SKEE PRESENTS TERRACE MARTIN'S SIGNAL FLOW

Over the last decade few people have put so much time and energy into the culture they love. Beginning his career as a rapper and producer, Terrace Martin has lent his skills to artists such as Snoop Dogg, Busta Rhymes, Lalah Hathaway, Raphael Saadiq, Charlie Wilson, Stevie Wonder and the legendary Emotions, just to name a few. Martins big break came when he produced a Power 106 radio drop with Snoop Dogg. Shattering the acknowledged rules of hip-hop production, he samples everything from funk to jazz to classical to create fresh and original tracks. His wildly imaginative productions have made him one of the most sought after upcoming producers on the streets of Los Angeles.

Born to father, a jazz drummer and mother, a singer, Martins birthright was music. Growing up listening to everyone from Coltrane to Parliament, he began playing the piano at the age of six. Producing his first tracks on his Casio CZ101 Keyboard and an Sp1200, Martin decided to broaden his musicality and picked up the saxophone.

At Locke High, under the auspices of Reggie Andrews, Martin became first chair of the All-State jazz band. As a child prodigy, Martin gained the interest of talk show host Jay Leno, who presented him with a scholarship and later purchased his first professional horn. Not only did Hollywood elite recognize Martin but also world-renowned jazz musician, Billy Higgins, who later made Martin a member of his World Stage All-Stars. Fresh out of high school, Martin attended Cal-Arts but decided school wasnt for him and began touring with Puff Daddy and gospels own Gods Property.

From jazz to hip-hop, Martins role models include Miles Davis, Charlie Parker, Jackie McLean, John Coltrane, Herbie Hancock, Sonny Stitt, Grover Washington, Jr., Dr.Dre, Dj Quik, Battlecat, Premier, Pete Rock, and1580 K-Day. Martin says, I started producing hip-hop tracks because it was the music of my time, but I never lost my love for jazz.

Terrace’s long awaited street album/mixtape presented by DJ Skee & Snoop Dogg, “Signal Flow,” featuring heavy hitters like Snoop Dogg, The Game, Busta Rhymes, Too Short, Kurupt, Nate Dogg; and rising stars Scar, Tru Life, Mykestro, Problem, and Yung Walt and many more is here for free download. Click on the cover to download “SIGNAL FLOW.”
